What is Reflexology?

Reflexology works the entire body by applying pressure to the reflex points located in the feet, hands or ears. Reflexology helps to reduce your stress and tension, improves your circulation and encourages your body to produce endorphins to bring you a natural healing effect. Reflexology has the ability to reduce pain, heal infections, be energizing and relaxing. Usually reflexology is performed by a trained profession using their hands or tools.  However, reflexology foot paths can do this naturally by just walking along the designated path created just for this purpose.

What is Reflexology Foot Path?

A Reflexology Foot Path is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and relates to some principles of reflexology, in that the uneven surface of the cobblestones stimulate acupressure points and regulate these pressure points located on the soles of the feet, which are connected to various energy meridians of the body. These acupoints are also linked to all organs and tissues of the body and their functions. Although there is considerable evidence indicating the health benefits of cobblestone walking, there are no controlled studies to scientifically evaluate its benefits and efficacy.

These foot paths are not easily found.  There has been an explosion of paths in Asia as their parks departments have installed them for their citizens and condo living often contain a reflexology path as well as a swimming pool. They have spread to Europe with German bare footed parks that are more like nature trails and can be a couple of kilometers long.  Now they are slowly being created in the U.S. as Washington State Parks Department has installed two and Bastyr University installed one as well.

What are the Benefits of a Reflexology Foot Path?

Reflexology foot paths can work the entire body and works to balance your energy systems. As known in Chinese medicine- your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels are all interconnected. By channeling outside energy your body is able to find a balance and peace. The reflexology foot path reduces stress and tension, releases energy blockages, reduces pain, and improves your overall health and wellbeing.

A recently completed study by scientists at the Oregon Research Institute (ORI) in Eugene confirmed earlier findings from study that walking on a cobblestone mat surface resulted in significant reductions in blood pressure and improvements in balance, mobility and physical performance among adults 60 and over.

In addition to these physical health benefits, the paths are usually set in a natural surrounding that also can offer peace and tranquility.  They may be grounding and bring participants the connection with nature and their own spirituality.  Reflexology foot paths encourage relaxation and balance leading to less anxiety and stress in our busy lives. You can also create your personal foot path in your own back yard or community.
